Basset Hound - Knockers

The name Basset originates from French „bas” meaning short, which itself constitutes a perfect definition of this breed. A reference to these dogs can be found as far as the 16th century in Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. The famous writer mentioned Basset’s loud barking and long ears. A representative of this breed can be also found in paintings, for example in a lady’s portrait by Agnes Berry.
